Present Progressive

The present progressive tense in Spanish describes something that’s happening right now. In English, we would say, for example, “He is eating.” It’s happening right now.

Just like in English, the Spanish present progressive has two parts; it combines the conjugated form of the verb “to be” (estar) and the present participle.  The present participle is basically like the “ing” form of verbs in English. Here’s how you form the present participle in Spanish:

For -ar verbs – the new ending is -ando.

For -er  / -ir  verbs – the new ending is -iendo.

Yo estoy comiendo en el restaurante.

She is speaking with her teacher.

Ella está hablando con su profesora.
