You will be using this virtual lab. Follow the directions laid out below to complete your lab. You will be going back and forth between the virtual lab page, this page, and your worksheet.
Once the lab loads you can look over the Overview and Learning Outcomes tabs, then click on the Experiment tab and select “Run Experiment.” You will see a beaker on a hot plate on the left and a calorimeter on the right. You will be using the solids tab beneath the beaker and the liquids tab beneath the calorimeter. Your screen should look like this:
Select Ag from the “Choose a solid” list beneath the beaker. Adjust the mass to 20.0 g
and adjust the temperature to 200°C. Click the “Next” button that will appear to the left.
Now select “water” from the “Choose a liquid” list beneath the calorimeter. Set the mass to 50.0 g and the temperature to 20.0°C. Record these beginning conditions in Table I of your lab worksheet. Click the blue “Next” button again.
In the “Run Experiment” section, click on the “Start” button. Record your observations of what is happening on your worksheet. Record the final conditions of the Ag and water on your table. Answer questions 1-5 on your worksheet.
Repeat the experiment, setting it up exactly the same way as mentioned above, but this time, click the box on the bottom right to show the microscopic view. Answer questions 6 and 7 on your worksheet.
Repeat the experiment for Au, Cu, and Fe. Fill in Table II of your worksheet and answer questions 8-11.
Repeat the experiment for the unknown metals and finish your worksheet.
