Camelot/Kennedy Rubric

Essay Requirements:

  1. At least 500 words
  2. At least 3 examples from Arthurian literature to support your opinion
  3. At least 2 quotes from other sources to support your opinion
  4. MLA formatted in-text citations for sources used (for literature and outside sources)
  5. MLA formatted works cited page
  6. A strong introduction and conclusion
  7. Use 3rd person (he, she, him, her, they, them). Do not use the first person in your paper (“I” or “my”).

Grading Rubric:

  1. Purpose and Focus (20 points)
    1. 20 points – Establishes and maintains clear focus; evidence of distinctive voice and/or appropriate tone
    2. 19-13 – Focused on a purpose; evidence of voice and/or suitable tone
    3. 12-6 – An attempt to establish and maintain purpose and communicate with the audience
    4. 5-1 – Limited awareness of audience and/or purpose
  2. Development of Ideas (20 points)
    1. 20 points – Depth and complexity of ideas supported by rich, engaging, and/or pertinent details; evidence of analysis, reflection and insight
    2. 19-13 – Depth of idea development supported by elaborated, relevant details
    3. 12-6 – Unelaborated idea development; unelaborated and/or repetitious details
    4. 5-1 – Minimal idea development, limited and/or unrelated details
  3. Sources (10 points)
    1. 10 points – Use of references indicate substantial research
    2. 9-6 – Use of references indicate ample research
    3. 5-3 – Some references
    4. 2-1 – Few references
  4. Organization (20 points)
    1. 20 points – Careful and/or suitable organization
    2. 19-13 – Logical organization
    3. 12-6 – Lapses in focus and/or coherence
    4. 5-1 – Random or weak organization
  5. Sentence Structure (10 points)
    1. 10 points – Variety of sentence structure and length
    2. 9-6 – Controlled and varied sentence structure
    3. 5-3 – Simplistic and/or awkward sentence structure
    4. 2-1 – Incorrect or lack of topic and/or ineffective wording and/or sentence structure
  6. Grammar and Formatting (10 points)
    1. 10 points – Control of surface features
    2. 9-6 – Few errors in grammar or format relative to length and complexity
    3. 5-3 – Some errors in grammar and/or format that do not interfere with communication
    4. 2-1 – Errors in grammar and format (e.g., spelling, punctuation, capitalization, headings)
  7. Language (10 points)
    1. 10 points – Precise and/or rich language
    2. 9-6 – Acceptable, effective language
    3. 5-3 – Simplistic and/or imprecise language
    4. 2-1 – Incorrect and/or ineffective wording and/or sentence structure
