This course uses three online workbooks: Simply Math, Home Math, and Kitchen Math. Students will be working through these to practice practical applications for math in everyday situations, from cooking for a crowd, choosing healthy foods, saving money on your bills, to painting a room. Most of the course will be word problems, since the point is application of the math, but the basic math skills needed will be reviewed at the beginning of the course.

Lesson 1(*)

  1. (*)Print out your grading sheet for the course or use the Excel version.
  2. Go through the pages on Whole Numbers, Place Value, and Rounding. These are pages 5-8 in the Simply Math workbook.
  3. When it says, “Let’s …” give it a try before you walk through the answer, unless you don’t know how to do it.
  4. When it says, “Try…” give it a try before checking the answer.
  5. Complete the “Try” section.
  6. Check your answers. Record your score out of 5.

Lesson 2

  1. Go through pages 9-15 in the Simply Math Workbook on addition and add and subtract and estimate.
  2. When it says, “Example,” try the example before you read through the explanation unless you don’t know how to do it.

Lesson 3

  1. Go through pages 16-20 in the Simply Math Workbook on multiplication and division.
  2. Try the examples. Write them out and then check your work.

Lesson 4

  1. Go through pages 21-24, finish through Finding the Average. Stop at Order of Operations.
  2. Try the examples. Write them out and check your work.

Lesson 5

  1. Go through Order of Operations on pages 24 and 25. Try the example and check your work.
  2. Try the game. Click on a character to start the game. Then click on the numbers and operation you need to do first.
  3. Exponents tell you to multiply the base number by itself that many times.
    • 3 to the 1st power is 3 one time. That’s 3.
    • 3 to the 2nd power is 3 x 3. That’s 9.
    • 3 to the 3rd power is 3 x 3 x 3. That’s 27.
    • Practice with exponents. Uncheck ZERO and then click Go. Record your score out of 5.
  4. Try the game. If you are ready for something harder, change the number of operations to four.
  5.  Do Factors and Prime and Composite Numbers on pages 25-27 of the Simply Math workbook.
  6. Practice factors. Record your score out of 5.
  7. Optional: hit the factors. Click on the boxes where you want to set up a deflector.

Lesson 6

  1. Go through the Greatest Common Factor and Multiples on pages 27-29 of the Simply Math workbook.
  2. Practice.

Lesson 7

  1. Go through pages 31-35 about Fractions and Equivalent Fractions.
  2. Find equivalent fractions. Record your score out of 10.
  3. Simplify fractions (which is finding an equivalent fraction). Record your score out of 10.

Lesson 8

  1. Go through pages 36-39 about adding and subtracting fractions and proper and improper fractions. Stop when it gets to adding improper fractions.
  2. Subtract fractions. Record your score out of 10.
  3. Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions. Record your score out of 10.
  4. Convert improper fractions to mixed numbers. Record your score out of 10.

Lesson 9

  1. Go through pages 39-43 in the Simply Math workbook about adding and subtracting mixed numbers and unlike fractions.
  2. Add mixed numbers. Record your score out of 10.
  3. Subtract mixed numbers. Record your score out of 10.

Lesson 10

  1. Go through pages 44-47 in the Simply Math workbook on multiplying and dividing fractions.
  2. Practice. Figure out an answer and then click on the box to check. Record your score out of 10.

Lesson 11

  1. Go through pages 49-52 on decimals in the Simply Math workbook.
  2. Do all the “try” examples and then check your answers. Record your score out of 5.
  3. Play.

Lesson 12

  1. Go through pages 53-55 on decimals and fractions in the Simply Math workbook.
  2. Convert decimals to fractions. Record your score out of 10.
  3. Convert fractions to decimals. Record your score out of 10.

Lesson 13

  1. Go through pages 56-58 on adding and subtracting decimals in the Simply Math workbook.
  2. Add decimals. Record your score out of 10.
  3. Subtract decimals. Record your score out of 10.
  4. Round decimals.

Lesson 14

  1. Go through pages 58-62 on multiplying and dividing decimals in the Simply Math workbook.
  2. Multiply decimals. Record your score out of 10.
  3. Divide decimals. Record your score out of 10.

Lesson 15

  1. Go through pages 63 and 64 on multiplying and dividing by ten in the Simply Math workbook.
  2. Multiply by tens. Record your score out of 10.
  3. Divide by tens. Record your score out of 10.

Lesson 16

  1. Go through pages 65-70 on changing fractions and decimals into percents.
  2. Convert decimals into percents. Record your score out of 10.
  3. Convert percents into decimals. Record your score out of 10.
  4. Convert percents into fractions. Record your score out of 10.
  5. Convert fractions into percents. Record your score out of 10.

Lesson 17

  1. Go through pages 71-73 on using percents in the Simply Math workbook. Stop at Finding Interest.
  2. Find percent of a number. Record your score out of 10.
  3. Find percent given the whole and part. Record your score out of 10.
  4. Find whole given percent and part. Record your score out of 10.

Lesson 18

  1. Go through pages 73-74 on finding interest.
  2. Practice finding interest. Record your score out of 4.

Lesson 19

  1. Go through pages 75-77 on ratio, proportion, and exponents.
  2. Solve ratios. Record your score out of 10.
  3. Practice the exponent rules. You will add or subtract the exponents. Record your score out of 10.

Lesson 20

  1. Go through pages 79-81 on measurement. Stop at Measurement (with the shape images).
  2. Practice using measurements. Record your score out of 7.
  3. Practice Fahrenheit/Celsius conversions. Scroll down and try the two practice problems, and then click on Practice in the top right corner. Do 5 practice problems and record your score out of 5.

Lesson 21

  1. Go through pages 82-83 on area and perimeter of rectangles, circles, and triangles.
  2. Practice with area.

Lesson 22

  1. Go through pages 84-89 in the Simply Math workbook.
  2. Find a recipe or food items in your pantry and find the conversion. If it says teaspoon, find it in milliliters. If it’s in ounces, find it in milliliters.

  1. Complete pages 6-10 in the Home Math workbook, Home Decorating #1.
  2. Check your answers. Record your score out of 25.
