My Observations:
Observations
He talks to himself in verse 2.
He’s asking God to preserve him because he’s trusting in God.
Saints parallelled with excellent ones and maybe inheritance with pleasant places.
The place of inheritance “fell.” That’s referring to being chosen by lot. My note on this says, “Ordained fate.”
Calls inheritance good and God is the inheritance.
God maintains the inheritance, doesn’t let us lose any ground.
“My goodness” is nothing apart from God. Calls it goodness, but it’s not. It’s nothing.
Those going after other gods have a lot of sorrows.
All of God’s delight is in His saints, and He is all our delight (joy/pleasure).
Says God is at his right hand and is set before him.
Questions: How do you “put” trust?
Repeated words/phrases: my/me/I
Noted words not discussed above: yes, instructs, because, shall not, therefore, rest, show, fullness, is, pleasures
My Interpretations:
Observations:
Asking God to preserve him BECAUSE he’s trusting makes it sounds like he believes God has to. I don’t think he thinks he is owed something but that he knows God’s character and how God responds to those who fear Him and trust Him.
Our inheritance is a pleasant place, chosen for us by God, God Himself, kept for us, good, all joy and great pleasure. We are in our inheritance (says God is at his right hand and is set before him.)
Our relationship with God is meant to be one of mutual delight.
If our goodness is nothing, is it good at all?
Those going after idols who may appear happy and thriving are truly people of sorrow. They are empty. They can’t know true love because God is love.
Questions: We “put” trust by making a decision and acting on it. “Faith without works is dead.” We live like we believe our trust is in God.
Repeated words/phrases: my/me/I – There is a lot of focus on self, but it’s connected to God. It shows relationship, not a far-off God. He expects God’s interaction/influence in his life.
Noted words not discussed above: He believes he won’t be moved/removed from his inheritance because God is with him. The fullness of joy is with God. There’s no more elsewhere. All the joy that can be had is found with God, in His presence. Just like all love is only found in God. Our pleasure is found in God’s presence, being with Him.
My Applications:
Do you know you are in the presence of God, kept there unmoved by God Himself?
Do you experience the fullness of joy and pleasure of His presence? (If not, is there a lack of trust?)
Have you put your trust in God? How does that show? Is there any way that you are living that betrays that trust?
Do you delight in God and do you know His delight in you?
